Language disorders refer to challenges children face in understanding and using words and sentences to communicate. A child with a language disorder might have difficulty following instructions, answering questions, putting sentences together, or using words to express their needs and ideas. At Paradise Speech Therapy, we help children with both receptive language (understanding what is said to them) and expressive language (putting their thoughts into words). Our licensed speech-language pathologists create individualized therapy plans to strengthen your child’s communication skills, building the foundation they need to interact confidently with others.

Some children may have difficulty communicating using spoken words alone. AAC, or Augmentative and Alternative Communication, provides alternative methods for children to express themselves. This could include the use of picture boards, sign language, or high-tech devices that "speak" for the child. At Paradise Speech Therapy, we assess your child’s unique needs and develop an AAC solution tailored to their abilities, whether they are non-verbal, minimally verbal, or need temporary support for speech development. We help children use these tools to effectively communicate with their family, friends, and teachers, giving them a voice in their daily life.
Developmental delays occur when a child does not reach certain communication milestones by the expected age. For instance, a toddler might not be using words or combining words into short sentences by age 2. At Paradise Speech Therapy, we specialize in identifying and addressing developmental delays in communication. Through early intervention, we focus on enhancing your child’s speech, language, and social interaction skills. Early support can make a huge difference in your child’s development, helping them catch up to their peers and giving them the tools they need to express themselves more fully.

Articulation refers to the ability to pronounce sounds correctly in speech. A child with an articulation disorder might leave out sounds, substitute one sound for another, or distort sounds, making their speech difficult to understand. For example, a child might say "wabbit" instead of "rabbit" or "thun" instead of "sun." Our speech therapists use engaging, play-based techniques to teach children how to properly produce speech sounds. With consistent practice, children improve their clarity, making it easier for others to understand them and boosting their self-confidence in everyday interactions.
-
Social Skills, or the way children use language to interact with others, is a critical part of their development. Children with social communication difficulties may struggle with understanding social cues like facial expressions, taking turns in conversations, or making friends. At Paradise Speech Therapy, we provide social skills training to help children learn how to engage appropriately with peers and adults. Therapy may focus on understanding body language, improving eye contact, handling group interactions, and navigating social situations. By enhancing these skills, we aim to help your child build stronger relationships and succeed in various social environments.
-
Auditory processing disorders affect how the brain processes sounds, making it hard for a child to distinguish, remember, or comprehend what they hear, even though their hearing may be normal. For instance, a child might hear instructions in the classroom but have trouble understanding or following them. At Paradise Speech Therapy, we work with children to improve their auditory processing skills by strengthening their ability to listen, remember, and interpret information. This can have a significant impact on their success in school and their ability to follow conversations at home or in social settings.
-
Childhood apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder where a child knows what they want to say, but their brain has difficulty coordinating the muscle movements necessary to produce speech. This can lead to inconsistent speech sounds, long pauses between words, or difficulty speaking clearly. At Paradise Speech Therapy, we provide specialized therapy to help children with apraxia develop the motor planning skills needed for speech. Therapy is intensive and focuses on helping the child practice sound sequences, build muscle memory, and improve their ability to produce speech that is understood by others.

Some children have difficulty maintaining attention or staying focused, which can affect their communication and learning. Children with attention difficulties may struggle to stay on task, follow directions, or stay engaged during conversations. At Paradise Speech Therapy, we incorporate strategies into our therapy sessions that help children improve their attention and focus while also building their communication skills. By offering structured, interactive activities, we aim to help your child strengthen both their attention span and their ability to communicate more effectively. -
Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by interruptions in the flow of speech, such as repeating sounds, prolonging sounds, or having difficulty getting words out. A child who stutters might get stuck on certain sounds or words, causing them to feel frustrated or anxious when speaking. At Paradise Speech Therapy, we provide compassionate and effective treatment for stuttering. Our goal is to help children speak more fluently by teaching them techniques to manage their speech, reduce tension, and build confidence. Therapy is tailored to the child’s unique needs, allowing them to improve their communication while feeling comfortable and supported.

Absolutely! We believe that involving parents or guardians in the therapy process can lead to better outcomes. Our therapists will provide guidance on how you can support your child's progress at home.
-
Speech therapy focuses on the physical production of sounds, including articulation and fluency, while language therapy addresses the comprehension and use of language, including expressive, receptive, and social communication. Both aim to improve aspects of communication but target different elements of the speech and language process.
-
All speech therapy sessions are 45 to 60 minutes. The frequency and length of sessions depend on your child's individual needs. After an initial evaluation, our therapists will recommend a schedule that will provide the best outcomes for your child.
-
If therapy is recommended for your child, your therapist will re-evaluate their speech, language, and communication skills every 6 months, as required by most insurance companies. At the re-evaluation, progress will be discussed and your therapist will determine if therapy is still recommended.
-
Evaluation and treatment sessions will be conducted by one of our therapists who are all state licensed and nationally certified by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
